Baby Event Dates 2023

We know many businesses run special baby events packed full of super discounts, but it can be hard keeping a track of when they are, so we’ve pulled together a handy little list for you.

Back to school doesn’t have to be stressful

Is your little one starting big school or do you have little ones going back to school to begin their new class? Every year brings an exciting new chapter in their lives, but it can also be a time to re-adjust as a family, especially after the holidays and spending so much time at home. Here we share some top tips for helping you and your little ones get organised and back into a routine, helping them, and helping you.

  1. Don’t leave uniform shopping too late Try not to leave uniform shopping until the last minute. We know how quickly they grow and the wish to leave things as close to going back to school as we can, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for or you’ve missed the sales, it can put additional pressure on you and take you away from enjoying those final few days together. Ask your school if they have a second hand school uniform shop, this can be a great way to save money and recycle pre-loved items.
  2. Label everything!!! There is nothing more infuriating than that brand new school logo cardigan going missing on day 1, but it happens. Taking a little time to label can save a long time hunting for missing items or shopping for replacements.
  3. Secure time together as a family, distraction free Find a moment to sit as a family and discuss starting/going back to school. Try and encourage excitement and all the super things they can look forward to, but use the opportunity to talk about teamwork and how you’ll help each other as a family, eg helping mummy/daddy make packed lunches, getting our things ready the night before, doing our homework etc.
  4. Homework prep Think about ways you can encourage them to read/do homework, this may involve setting up a nice quiet space for them to do it in or a reward chart or something similar, but it can help keep them focussed and inspired to do more.
  5. Get back into routines Try and get back into a bedtime routine, agreeing what time they’ll go and things you can do to settle them down, eg, bath, bedtime story, calming music, etc. Trying to get back into a routine the night before school goes back can be challenging, so try and do it at least a week before. Turning off devices a couple of hours before bedtime can be a big help too.
  6. Enable stress free mornings While we know when it gets late, you can be bursting to just head up to bed, but taking 10 minutes to set the table with breakfast items for the next morning, laying out uniform, packing bags and leaving them beside the door can really help make mornings less stressful.
  7. Accessing support from other parents Ask school or other parents if there are class specific WhatsApp or Facebook groups you can join. If there isn’t, why not set one up? Keeping in touch with other class parents can be a great sense of support.
  8. Ensure school admin time We know inboxes can be awash with school related messages, whether that be party invites, craft items they need to bring in, word of the week they need to learn, or a sudden change of PE day, it can be a lot to keep up with. Why not take a set moment each week to catch up on school admin and put key things in your calendar? If your child does a weekly class where you have to sit and wait for them, this can be the ideal time.
  9. Find out how your child’s day has been Make time to ask how your child’s day has been without them feel interrogated. We stick to 4 simple questions which they never seem to mind answering. 1. What was the best part of today? 2. Did anything or anyone make you feel a little sad or angry? 3. What was the yummiest thing you ate? 4. Tell us something kind you did to help someone today?
  10. Ask for help and support While we hope things run smoothly, there can always be times when things can be a little overwhelming. Exhaustion, struggling to find time for you, children not settling as you’d hoped, experiencing anxiety over their difficult interactions with others are just some of the things that you can experience, and all are perfectly normal. You never need to be alone, talking to other parents and asking for advice and support is so important. Remember, you can always ask for support in our Chat Group, you can even ask your question or for advice anonymously if you prefer. Never struggle, we’re all in this parenting journey together.

Treasure the little things A note to the parents with slightly older children…..during a chat with a lovely mum friend this week, she spoke about how their child’s behaviour changed when they went into year 6. Little things like no longer wanting to hold your hand or hug you goodbye at the gates, not wanting to chat about their day, and other changes that occur in children of that age. While every child is different, it made me realise how precious these little moments of holding hands and kisses goodbye are, so as a mum with a child just about to head into year 6, we for sure are going to treasure these moments for as long as we can.

Wishing you and your mini mumblers a great start back, and here’s to a super academic year for you all!

Camp Bestival Shropshire 2023 Last few tickets on sale!

Festival season is well & truly upon us for 2023 and it’s not too late to ensure that you’re there this summer with your family! If you’re a regular reader of Mumbler, you will remember when we visited Camp Bestival in Shropshire last year- it was the first time they’d brought Camp Bestival up north (the original Camp Bestival is at Lulworth Castle in Dorset and will run 27-30th July)

Well I’m delighted to let you know that Camp Bestival Shropshire is coming back this summer to Weston Park 17-20th August.

It is no exaggeration to say that our weekend at Camp Bestival last summer was one of the most fun, memorable family weekends that we’ve ever had! We cannot wait to go back this summer.

There are still limited tickets available for both locations so don’t wait… Get booking!

Tickets for Lulworth Castle in Dorset 27-30th July are here:

Tickets for Weston Park Shropshire 17th-20th August are here:

The Bee Hive

Kid’s Catwalk Stage
There is so much planned for Camp Bestival Shropshire in 2023: The party starts on Friday 18 August with pop-royalty Rudimental, alongside disco diva Sophie Ellis-Bextor and playlist dominators Confidence Man as headliners. Junior Andre will make his Camp Bestival debut alongside Manchester legends Bez & Rowetta, The Bootleg Beatles and Dub Pistols who will deliver a DJ set for the whole family to remember. Man Vs. Baby, Badly Drawn Boy and Horrible Histories – Barmy Britain will also descend onto the fields on the Friday.

Moving into Saturday, synth-pop’s first international superstars The Human League will lead the headlining trinity opened by DJ legends Groove Armada and BBC Radio 2 DJ Sara Cox. Space-Man Sam Ryder and Dick and Dom as well as the children’s idols Mr Tumble and Mister Maker will keep the beats popping on Saturday. Sara Cox will lead and judge this year’s family fancy dress competition on the second day of the Shropshire jamboree.

Even the teenager got into the spirit of the festival! This is a HUGE achievement!

Ear defenders are a must for little ears!
Headlining the final day of Camp Bestival Shropshire is the iconic Scottish rock band Primal Scream, 90s pop icon Melanie C and singer-songwriter Ella Henderson. East 17 will deliver a truly sensational Christmas themed set in August, mixed with everyone’s favourite motivator, Mr Motivator, Hot Dub Time Machine, Napalm Death and legendary party series Bongo’s Bingo. As if this wasn’t enough Elvana: Elvis Fronted Nirvana, Goldie Lookin Chain and many more will also make an appearance. Son et Lumiere Fireworks Spectacular will also deliver an unforgettable Camp Bestival Shropshire firework finale to the backdrop of Weston Park.

Camp Bestival Shropshire will host a wonderland of expansive green spaces, luxuriant lawns, verdant parkland, and enchanting woodlands providing a weekend of fun for everyone. With food stalls and cuisines galore, you can forget lukewarm porridge out of a pan, and what’s more, the sheer volume of activities on offer means children (and parents!) will be guaranteed a good night’s sleep no matter what.

A festival for every family, this year marks 15 years of Camp Bestival entertaining festival-goers with genre spanning line-ups combined with all-new Roller Disco, Paddleboarding, Wild Swimming, Raft-building, Kayaking, SUP Yoga, Spinney Hollow Craft Village, Cirque Bijou’s circus shows, Lantern Making, The World’s Biggest Bouncy Castle, Drag Storytime, Skate School, Extreme Bikes, Textile & Fashion World, African Drumming, Ice Baths, Silent Discos and so many more unforgettable family experiences…

Camp Bestival Shropshire takes place at Weston Park, 17-20 August 2023. For more info and tickets please visit shropshire.campbestival.net.

10 ideas to make your family walks extra fun

Spring can be such a lovely time to get out as a family and enjoy the great outdoors. We’ve come up with 10 ideas to help make getting some much needed fresh air and exercise a little bit more fun…

Our first tip is to try and add some variety to your walking route so you are not doing the same old circuit again and again. If possible try and change your route as much as you can to try and see new things. Play some of the games below whilst walking along or have an I spy list so you have something to look out for. That always seems to make sure little legs don’t get as tired.

1. Play a game 🎰🎰🎰family doing trail

This idea is pretty similar to how you might pass time on a long car journey. Try and think of different games you can play together whilst walking along. Here are a few suggestions:

  • I spy – needs no explanation!
  • Going on a picnic – one person says an item you’d take on a picnic. The next person then repeats that item and adds a new one to the list. It carries on until someone forgets the whole list!
  • Alphabet hunt – look for the letters of the alphabet in order on road and street signs
  • Counting game – count 10 cars, 10 trees, 10 dogs…you get the idea!
  • Create a story together – each person takes it in turns to say make up a story by saying one line at a time
  • Think of an animal – the rest of your family has to guess what animal you are by asking you questions that you can only say yes or no to!
  • Ghost – a good spelling game for older kids. The challenge is to add letters to form a word but not be the one that completes the word. Start with a random letter, then each player takes turns adding new letters.

2. Make your own ‘I spy’ list 👀 👀 👀Homemade ispy list

Make up your own simple ‘I spy’ lists to take out on your walk and tick off. You can do a new list each time you go out. You can include anything from road signs to nature! We’ve listed some ideas below:

  • Tick off different types of vehicles
  • Tick off different road signs
  • Tick off numbers in sets
  • Tick off and identify different types of trees or flowers
  • Tick off a list of things you know you’ll see but your children might not have noticed…letterbox, manhole cover, bus stop, park bench etc

3. Go looking for bugs 🐞🐞🐞insect hunting

If you have a magnifying glass, why keep your eyes on the ground and go looking for some bugs in your street. Just remember not to touch or pick anything up. Just look at the insects if you are out in public. If you want to do some real bug hunting, and if you have a garden, then that is the safest place for a full bug hunt.

4. Take some photographs 📸📸📸child taking pictures outside

Letting your child take some photos can add some variety to your daily walk and they will probably love being in charge of the camera. Try writing a list before you go out of things to photograph. It’s also a good way to ‘collect’ the items on your ‘I spy’ lists.

You could set a theme for the photos you take on your walk and print them off when you get home to turn into a collage.

Of course, you also get to enjoy ‘editing’ 3 million photos from your camera/phone when you get home. 😂

5. Turn your walk into an obstacle course 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️father and child walkin

Ok, so it’s not going to be as fun as a trip to the park, but why not try balancing on any lines you see, not standing on the cracks or jumping over any covers in the pavements. Please engage in this activity responsibly, and remember to keep at least 2 metres apart from others not in your family at all times.

6. Play what does the sign mean? 🚫🚫🚫road signs-

As a lot of us are simply walking around our local neighbourhoods at the moment there are probably plenty of road and street signs to see. Ask your child to read the signs or ask them what they think they mean.

7. Design a trail 🗾🗾🗾children walking

You could design your own trail for your children around your local streets. Decide on a simple circular route and write down basic directions and clues for them to solve. The clues can be based on street signs, road signs or shop names, even manhole covers – there are plenty of words out there when you start looking. The answer to the clue should reveal one letter and then all the answers (letters) make up an anagram your child needs to work out at the end.

8. Beat your step count⌚️⌚️⌚️step count

Why not try to beat your previous day’s step count…another lap around the block anyone? 😂

Or you could do the same walk a few times and see if you can beat your time! Might get everyone moving along to try and shave a few seconds off your personal best!

9. Map reading 🗺🗺🗺child with map

Give your child a map (either print off a map of your local area or use your phone). You can teach your child how to read the map, identify north and south, and try to navigate. Maybe you can encourage your child to plan a route or draw a map of your route before you head out.

You could also use a mapping app on your phone and show your child how to use it.

10. Do one of our themed Scavenger Hunts…simply write a list of things to find and tick them off as you go.

Easy Picnic Food Ideas for Kids

I don’t know about you but sometimes I fancy something a bit different for picnics. As a kid I remember squashed cheese and piccalilli sandwiches which perhaps have made me a bit adverse to the whole picnic idea, but in recent times and since having a child of my own, I’ve discovered you can totally make it worth while dragging picnic bags around on days out. Some of the ideas are really simple and some take a bit of prep (hardly any, I promise) – but you can get the kids involved the day before as something to do. Kids love to “help” out in the kitchen, don’t they? We’ve put together a mix of nutritious and yummy ideas that we have used ourselves, found online or been told about by friends, so that you can have some relaxed family time while knowing you and your mini mumblers have happy full tums.

Keeping Baby Cool In Warm Weather

Remember to keep your baby safe in the warmer weather. They can overheat quickly and do not have the ability to cool themselves down. The lullaby trust have some great information on keeping your baby safe and well.
https://www.facebook.com/LullabyTrust/
http://www.lullabytrust.org.uk/

Information below taken from the Lullaby Trust Website (http://www.lullabytrust.org.uk/roomtemperature)

AVOID LETTING YOUR BABY GET TOO HOT
It is important to make sure that your baby is a comfortable temperature – not too hot or too cold. The chance of SIDS is higher in babies who get too hot.

A room temperature of 16-20°C, with light bedding or a lightweight well-fitting baby sleep bag that is comfortable and safe for sleeping babies.

It can be difficult to judge the temperature in the room, so use a room thermometer in the rooms where your baby sleeps and plays. A simple room thermometer is available from The Lullaby Trust online shop. For more information please call 020 7802 3200.

Advice on room temperature is intended as a guide. Every baby is different, so while it’s important to be informed about overheating you need to check your baby regularly to see if he or she is too hot. Feel the baby’s tummy or the back of their neck (your baby’s hands and feet will usually be cooler, which is normal). If your baby’s skin is hot or sweaty, remove one or more layers of bedclothes.

Babies who are unwell need fewer, not more bedclothes. Babies do not need to wear hats indoors, nor sleep under a duvet or quilt.

Remember that the safest place for your baby to sleep is in the same room with you for the first six months – this will be especially helpful in judging the temperature they will be sleeping at.

Some extra super tips shared from our sister site, Harrogate Mumbler

1.   Blinds/Curtains shut and windows open

My daughter was born in the middle of a heat wave.  When we finally got her home at 8pm – our flat was a sweltering 31 degrees. Damn that sad face on the Gro-Egg Thermometer!  If we’d just thought ahead – closed all the blinds to block the sun, and opened the windows to create a breeze we could have knocked a good few degrees off that thermometer – but I guess we were kind of busy!  It’s what we did for the remainder of the heat wave and it worked a treat. Keep them closed all day if you can.

2.   Freeze large bottles of water

Ice Ice baby (anyone else counting how many rap references I can shoe horn into this article?!).  I’m talking 1-litre bottles plus, if you’ve got enough room in the freezer, freeze as many as you can!   Place them in your little ones room overnight – it will help to cool the air as they melt.

3.   Cool baths

A slightly cooler bath than usual just before bedtime should help refresh your baby – just a quick one though – don’t want them getting too chilly!  This was another staple last summer in our household – my then 9 month old spent most of her time in the tub on the really hot days.

4.   Hang the washing out

Hanging damp towels or sheets in front of an open window will help bring down the room’s temperature.

5.   Ice fans

Another firm favourite in our household.  An electric fan on its own doesn’t really cut the mustard– generally just blowing the warm air around.  But put a large bowl of ice in front of the fan and it will cool the air that circulates the room in no time!

Hope these tips help to keep your little ones cool this summer.   Hang on in there and just remember, it’ll probably rain tomorrow!

Summer Sleep Blog

sleep, baby not sleeping, sleep help, sleep support, baby wont sleep, sleep regressionThe glimpse of summer that accompanied the Easter weekend may have brought sleep disruption for some families. Many adults struggle to sleep when the mercury soars so it’s hardly surprising that warmer temperatures can wreak havoc with a little one’s sleep too. For parents of young babies, those warmer nights may also bring safety concerns with hotter sleeping environments being a known risk factor for SIDS. The good news is that there are several easy steps parents can take to help their little ones sleep safely and soundly when the next heatwave hits.

1. Be in-the-know
Don’t guess when it comes to the temperature of your child’s room. The ideal 16-20°C can feel surprisingly cool to an adult and whilst we can typically tell if a room feels warmer than usual, it is imperative to know if the room is dangerously hot. Don’t guess!

2. Plan ahead
Daytime action is important to keeping a room cool at night. On hot days, open doors and windows throughout the house to allow air to circulate. Opening loft hatches can be a particularly effective way to cool the home. You may find that keeping your child’s curtains partially closed minimises the heat entering the room.

3. Give fans a hand
A room fan can help the process of air circulation. Sometimes, however, they simply recirculate warm air. Placing a bowl of ice or frozen water bottle a safe distance in front of the fan and/or draping cold, wet towels over door frames and chair backs can help to cool the air. Of course, electrical devices and water do not mix safely so always be mindful of this with a small human around!

4. Be flexible
If, despite your best efforts, your little one’s room is still uncomfortably warm when bedtime comes around, consider moving baby to any cooler room for a night or two – even if that means setting up the travel cot.

5. Be nap-aware
In warm weather car-seat snoozing can be uncomfortable or even dangerous for a little one as they are likely to become hot very quickly. Similarly, covering a pram rapidly and substantially increases the internal temperature. Whilst it is important to shield a baby from the sun whilst in their pram or pushchair this should always be by way of a parasol or sunshade which enables air to circulate.

6. Avoid synthetics
Waterproof sheets and bedding containing polyester or other synthetic fibres will make a little one considerably hotter than a 100% cotton bottom sheet.

7. Keep cool before bed
Feeling asleep is typically more difficult if our body feels too warm. It is therefore sensible to wind children down from energetic activities well ahead of bedtime. Dropping the bath temperature by just a degree or two can also help children to fall asleep more easily.

8. Review clothing
It can be tricky to know how to dress your little one for summer sleep. Often some trial and error is required to find what suits your little one best. Be aware that around 5am is usually the coldest part of the night – both in terms of the room and core body temperature (which drops in the last part of the night as part of the drive towards wakefulness). A baby who has been comfortable throughout the rest of the night due to being cold. To accommodate the overnight temperature variation you may find popping a light layer on your little one before you go to bed helps them sleep through to their usual wake up time.

9. Consider additional feeds
Exclusively breastfed babies do not need to be supplemented with water but you may find they want to feed more frequently in hot weather. This is normal and natural. Bottle-fed babies may require water in addition to formula during hot weather. In accordance with NHS guidelines, for babies under 6 months, tap water should always be boiled and cooled. For babies over 6 months (including breastfed babies who have commenced weaning), tap water no longer needs to be boiled.

10. Stay safe
Babies are at an increased risk of SIDS during their first year and an overly warm room is a known risk factor. Room-sharing with your little one makes it easy to check on them frequently and to have early warning if the room feels particularly warm. If, at any time, you notice your baby is unusually red, has any form of rash or is breathing in a way that is different to normal then seek immediate medical advice.
