Home Educators’ Day at The Deep, Hull

Jump in and join us on our next Home Educators’ Day on Monday 14 January 2019. We will take you Under the Sea and explore the wonders of the world’s oceans.

Let us familiarise you with a variety of aquatic animals, their relationships with each other and the effects of human encounters.

Workshops are tailored to a variety of ages, giving everyone an opportunity to make the most of their day. Children are welcome to undertake more than one workshop if desired.

York Mumbler Nearly New Sale

Grab some bargains! For pre-loved baby and toddler clothes, toys and nursery items. At Clements Hall, York (behind Scarcroft School)

  • Parking available at the school.

These sales are always very busy so please, if at all possible, bring slings to carry babies rather than push chairs. There will, of course, be enough space to push a pram round if needed though.

Flippin Fantastic Fun at The Deep

Join us for some ‘flippin’ fantastic fun as we celebrate Penguin Awareness Weekend. See our love-able VIP’s (that’s very important penguins) in the Kingdom of Ice enjoying their lunch at 11:30am and 3:30pm as well as meeting their keepers.

Find out if you have what it takes to be a penguin keeper in our interactive presentation at 1pm (in Endless Ocean) as our team dive into how we care for our penguins. Get hands on with real penguin nests, feathers, and see how we make our penguin ID bands. Plus you can hear about how penguins breed, the signs of courtship and caring for penguin chicks. Take a picture with Pebbles the penguin mascot in Endless Ocean at 11am and 3pm, and make your very own penguin mask in craft corner from 11am to 4pm.

Parent to be event – Mamas and Papas, Birstall, Leeds

An information event for expectant parents where Lindsey Fake of Love Your Labour will also be guest speaking about hypnobirthing and the different local courses she offers.

Charity 7 – a side Rugby Tournament, Acorn Rugby Club, York

All money raised will split between the Downes family and cancer research.
The York City Knights boys, Joe Porter, Ash Robson & Matt Chilton will be attending with a signed shirt and ball for raffle/auction
10am start.
There will be something going on all day so even if you can only make an hour, Every penny counts for this great cause.

The Big Fish Campaign is back and The Deep is helping to spread the word about smart choices for home aquariums. Join us across Big Fish Fortnight where our team will dispel the myths and shed light on just how big these tank busters grow!

Get the kids involved with our interactive family presentations across both weekends (26th, 27th January & 2nd, 3rd February) at 11am, 1pm and 3pm or pop along through the week to catch a grown up version of the presentation at 3pm.  Join us at Craft Corner for catfish badge making and take part in the Big Fish trail for the chance to win a fish-tastic prize!

Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th January

Little farmers – Sugarlump and the Unicorn, Brimham Rocks Adventure Farm, Harrogate

This term we are reading some of our favourite Julia Donaldson books and we will be using these to base our activities around. Join us as we meet our very own unicorn and meet some other animals who also have horns! We will look at how the horns are different and why they need them.

Stand-up comedian, viral blogger and bestselling author Sam Avery gives an honest, messy account of wrestling with sleep deprivation and breast pumps – right through to his botched attempts at discipline and pathetic bids to stifle various toddler tantrums that definitely registered on the Richter scale – will have you testing your pelvic floor with laughter.

Free family art workshops, The Tetley, Leeds

Take part in artist led sessions inspired by our programme and our building. Activities can include anything from making simple prints to dressing-up, book-making and creating recycled crafts! Every other Saturday, 11am–3pm, FREE, drop-in.
This week: Create Your Own Secret Identity – Join us in our immersive workshop, dress up and make your own props to create a new character.

Extended Relaxation Session, Ricall

Due to popular demand, I am running the Monthly Extended Relaxation class twice this January:

Over an hour to experience deep relaxation and gorgeous supported yoga stretches in the calming surroundings of The Old Granary.

It’s a lovely way to start your weekend, to recharge and get some always deserved ‘me time’. As one of my lovely students put it ‘you come out feeling like you’ve had a massage and the world’s most refreshing nap’.

Zoo workshops in January at Sewerby Hall and Gardens

The zoo at Sewerby Hall and Gardens now runs fun workshops at weekends offering children and families the chance to help animals and birds, try crafts, and learn new fun skills!

January will see a range of workshops, all held in the zoo between 11.30am and 12 noon.

The workshops will cover making fat balls for the local wild birds and some fruit and vegetable kebabs for animals.

The zoo workshops are included in the normal zoo admission charges at Sewerby Hall and Gardens.
