With special thanks to Sarah at Cabello Hair, Goole, for taking the time to share these great tips with our readers.
Your favourite jumper comes with a care label and now so does your hair thanks to Sarah Hartley’s hair care label (advice). A lot of people are making the simplest mistakes when it comes to just washing and drying their hair. This can really effect its condition. If you want to have shiny, gorgeous, healthy looking hair at home then keep reading.
1) Washing your hair everyday: No!!
This can stimulate the pores on your scalp (especially if you’re washing vigorously) to produce excess oil, making your hair look and feel like it needs another good wash within 24 hours – STOP! Try to wash your hair 3-4 times a week rather than everyday. Use a light dry shampoo in-between if you really need to.
2) Using really hot water when washing:
Try not to have your bath or shower water too hot as it can be damaging (like straighteners and hairdryers) due to the heat being so high. Warm water is fine for rinsing shampoo but when it comes to rinsing your conditioner, you need to use cool water to close the hair cuticles again. This will create gorgeous shiny hair.
3) Conditioning from your roots:
Try to apply your conditioner from mid length – ends only. The ends of your hair can get dry due to them being the oldest part of the hair and from styling. Conditioning will nourish the ends. Near the root has just started to grow so it won’t be dry. If you apply conditioner here this will put excess moisture onto the pores causing your roots to look greasy and then you will feel like you need to wash again sooner. Remember to squeeze your hair with a towel or face cloth to remove moisture before you apply your conditioner. You might remember this tip from our Colour care tips on Instagram. If you haven’t seen it take a look, it’s really helpful to keep your hair colourful.
4) Rough drying & combing your hair:
Just remember to be gentle with your hair if you want to look after it and keep it looking healthy. If you are too rough you can damage your hair or pull hairs out. Try to twist your towel round your hair into a turban, this will remove a lot of the water. Then let your hair air dry, naturally itself if you have time. If you really need to use heat, please use a heat protection product.
5) Putting your hair in a ponytail when it’s still wet:
If you put your hair up in a tight bun or ponytail with your hair still wet it can cause damage to your hair. Wet hair is more delicate so you can easily over stretch and snap it. It’s always better to put up on dry hair or even to put some serum in first would help to protect it.
So, to sum up – be gentle with your hair for it to shine!
