We were recently invited along to the beautiful Deighton Lodge (on the A19 between Selby and York) for a Wellness Day. We had no idea what to expect, but the word ‘wellness’ was all that was needed to convince us that this was the place for 2 shattered mums!
As we drove up to the venue, the first thing that hit us was how beautiful and tranquil the setting was, it was so peaceful and quiet, hard to believe it was just seconds away from a busy road.
We paused before heading inside, as we just wanted to take a moment to take in the surroundings, the beautiful gardens, and fabulous open countryside. We were soon greeted by Carla (the owner) who immediately made us feel so welcome, and like we’d met her before. We started with a tour inside of the beautifully converted farmhouse, then through and out into the recently renovated garden. Wow!! She fixed us up with a delicious cafetière of coffee and we could have quite easily have sat there all day. Lovely, comfy outdoor chairs and sofas, refreshments on tap, and the most beautiful, peaceful garden.
Once the other attendees arrived, it was off into the beautiful and extensively renovated barn for some yoga. Due to a current injury, I had to sit that one out, but we took with us, lovely local mumbler, Lucy, to test out the class. Here’s what she had to say….
“What a lovely way to spend a day, and practically on my doorstep to boot! The wellness day was a welcome change from crazy mum life and it felt totally indulgent. Carla’s style of yoga teaching is clear, supportive and challenging and I enjoyed both the Vinyasa and Restorative yoga sessions. We did our practice in a wonderfully converted barn that was spacious and airy. The food that we devoured whilst sitting in the sunshine underneath the pergola overlooking a beautiful garden, was super vegantastic and so delicious. Coffee, tea and water were available throughout and the environment was so relaxing. I can’t wait to book our next one x”
I observed the first yoga session and it was clear to see what a superb teacher Carla is, explaining each move and the benefits behind them, accommodating each individual’s needs and abilities. After yoga, it was back to the beautiful outdoor patio and garden for coffee and the most delicious selection of homemade, vegan baked delights. We were given so much time to sit, relax and chat. While it was so lovely to take a friend and make it a real girly day out, it’s also the kind of place where you would feel completely comfortable attending alone. You could take a book or some mags, and simply sit back and enjoy the quiet time to yourself. We were so lucky to have fabulous weather and wondered what it would have been like on a not so great day. Carla has it all covered (literally) with a fabulous overhead canopy and even on a cold day, the lounge inside is beautiful and you would be so happy sat snuggled on a sofa, we even hear there’s an open fire in there, raring to go on a cold day.
After plenty of time to relax and have a natter, lunch was served. More beautiful vegan delights, ensuring our tummies were just as revitalised as our body and mind. After lunch it was time for some restorative yoga (this one I could join in). This was a delight, the room was so relaxing, with music and incense to match, and Carla (as a busy mum herself), encouraging us to allow this time for ourselves, to recognise those mum stresses, to let them go, and to find that moment of silence and calm, that we often don’t hear as parents.
As the day came to end, I thought we’d be required to leave straight away, but quite the opposite, Carla encouraged us to stay (if we wanted), to spend some more time relaxing and to help ourselves to more refreshments.
In summary: What an amazing day! We can’t remember the last time we were allowed the time and space to just focus on us. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely welcomed, so well looked after and this didn’t stop the whole day through. Whether you’re a parent just wanting a little alone time, you’re looking for a lovely day out with a friend or relative (all within school hours), or perhaps a birthday or new parent gift, then this is the perfect retreat!
